Coronado Island Marriott Resort & Spa Wall Replacement Project

McMahon Engineering completed a wall replacement and stabilization project at the Coronado Island Marriott Resort & Spa in Coronado, California, in partnership with general contractor T.B. Penick and Sons. The project addressed a failing CMU retaining wall that required immediate structural stabilization and a long-term engineered solution in a demanding coastal environment.

The existing concrete masonry unit wall had begun to deteriorate, creating structural concerns and the potential for continued movement. Our team implemented a Bean and Lagging shoring system to stabilize surrounding soils and maintain site safety during demolition and reconstruction. This approach allowed excavation and structural work to proceed safely while preparing for construction of the new permanent retaining wall system.

The scope of work included the installation of 24 epoxy-coated 24-inch diameter piles extending up to 117 feet in length, with embedment depths of approximately 50 feet to achieve the required structural capacity. The corrosion-resistant coating was critical due to the project’s proximity to the Pacific Ocean and the harsh coastal conditions in Coronado and throughout San Diego County.

Following deep foundation installation, the existing CMU wall was demolished. 4×12 lagging was installed to retain soil and provide lateral support during construction.

Rebar was placed per project plans, along with installation of a comprehensive drainage system designed to relieve hydrostatic pressure behind the wall. Proper drainage plays a critical role in retaining wall performance, particularly in coastal Southern California where groundwater and irrigation runoff can affect long-term stability.

The project concluded with construction of a permanent shotcrete retaining wall built for durability and long-term structural performance. By combining deep foundation support, Bean and Lagging shoring, reinforcement, and integrated drainage, McMahon Engineering delivered a reliable retaining wall replacement solution tailored to the demands of a coastal resort property in Coronado, California.
